HHLA is pioneer of sustainability in the logistics sector - 30.05.2011

Along with five other major companies, including DHL, DB Schenker and Hellmann, on the sustainability theme HHLA is a member of the top group in the German logistics sector. Such is the result of an extensive survey conducted over the past two years by the Fraunhofer Working Group on Supply Chain Services SCS, specializing in applied research. Klaus-Dieter Peters, Executive Board Chairman of HHLA and also responsible for sustainability in the Group, sees the result as a spur: “We are delighted about this assessment that is also

confirmation of our sustainable business model designed for the long term. In the next few years we shall be further stepping up our activities for the environment, for society and for sustainable commercial operation with our sustainability offensive ‘On Course’.”

Fraunhofer SCS conducted a two-stage investigation into the 150 top-revenue German logistics service providers to bring some transparency to their commitment to sustainability. Even during Stage 1, HHLA already gained credit as a logistics company reporting very transparently on its sustainability activities. Now completed, Stage 2

concentrated on measures actually implemented. Altogether 13 criteria were applied. These included strategy and planning, but above all specific activities in areas such as conservation of resources and transport. The result: HHLA is among the six logistics service providers “at an outstanding level of sustainability“. It is accordingly a pioneer, whose sustainability planning “is deeply anchored in a strategic approach and forms an important part of its corporate values.” Its measures “lead to a systematic improvement in the situation on sustainability” and attest to “a high degree of innovation”. HHLA could therefore be understood as a “trailblazer”

that demonstrating the opportunities and limits in sustainable activity.”

The cornerstones of HHLA’s sustainability strategy include

● the organization of ecologically exemplary transport chains for container transport,

● space-efficient expansion of its facilities,

● energy-efficient and climatically compatible cargo handling and storage processes through automation and innovative equipment as well as the use of energy derived from renewable sources,

● the highest standards of occupational health and safety through comprehensive preventative (and safety) programmes, as well as

● decades of commitment to vocational and further training in port logistics.
