India in control of piracy situation - 02.06.2011
The Indian Navy is going ahead with its anti-piracy operations without let-up and is in control of the situation, the Naval Chief, Admiral Nirmal Verma, said recently. Responding to a query on whether the navy was planning suspending the anti-piracy drive, Admiral Verma asserted, "Our anti-piracy operations are continuing." In an interaction with scribes, he pointed out that the pressure being exerted by the multinational navies had resulted in the pirates shifting their activities to within a distance of about 500 nautical miles from the Indian shores, forcing the Indian Navy to engage them. Admiral Verma, who was on a visit to the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakvasla near here, reviewed the passing out parade of the cadets of the premiere training institution. He assured that vigilance along the coast was very high due to coordination between the Coast Guard and fishermen after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, according to Exim News Service.
