Alternative gateway for India’s container trade - 20.04.2011
Mundra Port has well and truly emerged as an alternative gateway for the country’s container trade, registering all all-time high throughput of close to a million and a quarter TEUs in 2010-11, according to Exim News Service. The Port’s two terminals—Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) and Adani Mundra Container Terminal (MPSEZ AMCT)—handled a combined nearly 1.24 million TEUs (12,30,627.25 TEUs) in the fiscal under review, with MICT contributing 6,89,021.25 TEUs and AMCT 5,41,606 TEUs. This was facilitated by increased services at the two terminals, enhanced rail connections, especially from north Indian inland container depots (ICDs) and the world class operational efficiencies of MICT and AMCT, complemented by the Port’s ideal location and excellent draught. ICD throughput too was impressive, at 1,35,849 TEUs and 1,19,220 TEUs for MICT and AMCT, respectively. And with Kandla Port’s ABG Kandla Container Terminal handling 1,60,243 TEUs in 2010-11, the contribution of facilities in just the Kutch region of Gujarat to the country’s box traffic can be deemed as pretty significant. Given that the growth of containerisation in India is faster than the global average, these facilities, especially those at Mundra Port, are poised to be at the forefront of the boom in box traffic in the country.
